US Army to Conduct Autonomous Truck Convoy Test on Highways
In a move that could accelerate the onset of autonomous vehicles on the road, the United States is Army is looking to test self-driving trucks on a public highway.
According to a Forbes report, the test will occur on Interstate 69 in June and will include four vehicles. In the June test, drivers will remain in control of the vehicles but further tests are planned that will see the trucks go fully autonomous. The June test will see how the vehicles communicate with one another and with nonmilitary vehicles as well as the highway network through radio links.
One way this could happen is that the trucks, will send their speed and location to roadside transponders that will reply with information like the closure of certain lanes of the highway due to road works and the speed limits on the stretch of highway.
