Professor Eric Sampson CBE, ITS United Kingdom Ambassador, elected to the international ITS Hall of Fame
The worldwide Intelligent Transport Systems community has completed voting for the 2016 ITS Hall of Fame Awards.
The Board of Directors of the ITS World Congresses decided in 2010 to recognise personal and corporate achievements by election to the Hall of Fame. The Awards offer an opportunity to highlight the successes of the most outstanding, ambitious and innovative ITS deployments and to reward the people and organisations most worthy of recognition and praise.
One person from the Europe / Africa / Middle East region is elected to the Hall of Fame for Lifetime Personal Achievement each year. This year, that honour goes to Professor Eric Sampson CBE, formerly of the UK Department for Transport and currently visiting Professor at Newcastle University, UK and Ambassador for ITS United Kingdom.
The Awards will be presented and celebrated during the ITS Hall of Fame Ceremonies during the ITS World Congress in Australia 10-14 October 2016.
Professor Sampson commented: “I have had a very good week: on Monday HMCE notified me of a tax refund, and on Tuesday I was contacted by Dr Hermann Meyer, CEO of ERTICO, with the news that I had been elected by my peers to the Hall of Fame. When I look at the previous winners I have doubts on my being fit to join them – but I’m not giving back my place.”
Jennie Martin, Secretary General of ITS (UK), added: “Eric is a leading figure not only in the UK but respected and liked throughout the worldwide ITS sector. Having had a very successful career, he now spends his time working for the good of the sector as a whole: contributing to keeping the ITS Congresses up to date and relevant, mentoring younger ITS professionals, and always giving generously of his time and expertise. ITS (UK) is privileged to have him as our Ambassador and we congratulate him on this well deserved recognition.”
