New Mobile App Set to Eliminate Toll Queues

Most of us have had an annoying time waiting at the long queues at toll plazas across expressways. This 19-year-old from Mumbai thus came up with a mobile application to pay tolls through your smart phone.

Tapan Baburao Kane, a second-year instrumentation engineering student, thought about the concept in January 2015 while he was waiting at one such toll booth. He began work the next month and developed an application called ‘Vtoll’, short for virtual toll.

The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) is currently studying the app and will conduct a trial for the Bandra-Worli Sea Link toll.

“I had approached the government last year but there was no response from them. This year, the MSRDC has said that it will work on it,” said Tapan.

A user has to register on the app with his/her name, e-mail id vehicle name (Eg: Honda City) and number and it works on a location-based technology. The user has to be in a radius of 500 meters from the toll booth to use it.

“Our system will send the information once the payment is made and the toll will receive details of the payment. The user too will get a message that the payment has been received,” explained Tapan.

Tapan believes that this will help the government maintain transparency along with easing traffic near the toll booths and saving time. The app will also provide monthly, quarterly and return pass services.
