ITS Award-winning Xerox’s transportation business to be named Conduent


Following the win of a major award at ITS America’s Annual Meeting & Expo in San Jose, California, last week, Xerox has announced the names of the new companies that will be created following the completion of its separation into two publicly traded companies.

Xerox expects to complete the separation of the two divisions by the end of the year, with its Business Process Outsourcing company to be named Conduent Inc, while the Document Technology company will continue to be called Xerox Corporation. The company says the name Conduent is inspired by its expertise in connecting clients and their constituents through seamless transactions at a massive scale in areas such as customer care, transportation systems, and healthcare payer and provider services. Conduent reflects the company’s position as a partner to businesses and governments, delivering experiences that drive satisfaction and retention among consumers, patients, commuters and employees.

 

 

 

 

 

Xerox’s transportation business will come under the Conduent umbrella, which will have the second-largest market share in the business process outsourcing industry. The company is heavily involved in: electronic toll collection and processing; parking management systems and revenue processing; public transport management and fare collection; commercial vehicle operations and highway weigh station bypass systems; photo enforcement of speed, red-light, school bus and zone programs; and other intelligent transportation systems (ITS) and smart mobility technologies, including connected and autonomous vehicles.

“Conduent will begin its next chapter as a standalone company with a name that conveys the vital business we conduct every day,” said Ursula Burns, chairman and CEO of Xerox. “Conduent is well-positioned to build on its strong heritage as a leader in business process services, and will carry forward the values and culture of innovation, diversity and integrity from Xerox.”
To emphasize the company’s transportation technology expertise, last week Xerox won the Best of ITS Award in the Best Partnership Project in Infrastructure of Things category. Xerox was honored by ITS America for its partnership with Caltrans, which recently piloted the company’s Vehicle Passenger Detection System (VPDS), which is an HOV/HOT lane compliancy test system that uses video analytics to identify the number of occupants in a vehicle with 95% accuracy at speeds up to 100mph (160km/h).

“Our detection system is a tool that is designed to help agencies keep roadways safer and improve throughput. VPDS enables the agency to detect violators and to uphold the integrity of the HOV/HOT lane. Caltrans, in particular, was interested in the use of the tool to count throughput of actual people, and not just vehicles,” said Joseph Averkamp, senior director of technology, policy and strategy at Xerox. “During the VPDS pilot, the system enabled Caltrans to determine the number of single occupant vehicles in the HOV lane with 96% accuracy.”

 

 

 

 

Joe Rouse, program liaison and managed lanes/tolling support at Caltrans, noted, “Good data is key to successfully operating managed lanes. The Xerox VPDS allows operators like us to obtain information more effectively than traditional data collection methods. It will allow for better decision-making, as we evaluate the performance of our managed lanes.”
