Former traffic cop turned MP Bill Tilley calls for European-style hoon highway

Former traffic cop turned MP Bill Tilley calls for European-style hoon highway and though his plan is at odds with road safety groups, and with Victoria Police, the MP denies it is a safety risk, saying: “The default position in Australia is that speed kills. I disagree with that statement.”

Mr Tilley said: “It’s a whole range of things and not all speed — it’s drugs, alcohol, driver education, infrastructure and the motor vehicles themselves.

“I think in this day and age, with the type of vehicles we have, the roads we have, we can accept a 130km/h limit.

“We continually ask taxpayers to help pay for road safety and road infrastructure and you have to give something back for making improvements to those roads.”
