RSS FEEDS

What is RSS?
RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is a way of keeping up to date with news and information from websites you are interested in. RSS allows you to see when those sites have added new content – you don’t have to visit them.

RSS feeds are designed to be read by computers rather than people. For those of you old enough to remember ticker-tape news wire machines, the concept of RSS feeds will be familiar.

By signing up to Thinking Highways RSS feeds you will receive the latest news, event information, announcements and notifications when online versions of our magazines or episodes of our podcast, the Thinking Highways Half Hour Or So have been uploaded. Let the news come to you...

How do I use it?
To use RSS feeds you need a piece of software called a news reader. News readers check RSS feeds and allow you to read new articles that have been added to them. There are lots of different versions, some of which are accessed from a browser and some of which are downloadable applications. Browser-based news readers let you catch up with your RSS feed subscriptions from any computer, whereas downloadable applications let you store them only on your main computer, in the same way that you either download your e-mail using Outlook or Entourage, or keep it on a web-based service like Hotmail.

Once you have your news reader, choose what content you want to receive in your news reader by searching and subscribing to the relevant RSS feeds. For example, if you would like the latest Thinking Highways news, visit the Newsl section and you will see an orange RSS button near the top right corner of the page.

Click on the button and can subscribe to the feed in a number of ways, including by dragging the URL of the RSS feed into your news reader or by copyng and pasting the same URL into a new feed in your news reader. Both ways work as well as each other, the choice is yours...

Some browsers, including Firefox, Opera and Safari, automatically check for RSS feeds for you when you visit a website, and display an icon when they find one. This can make subscribing to RSS feeds much easier. For more details on these, please check their websites.

How do I choose a news reader?
New versions of news readers are becoming available all the time. Different versions work on different operating systems, so you will need to choose one that will work with your computer.

How do I use TH feeds on my website?
